Rummy mixes luck and skill. You cannot control the cards you are dealt, but you can control how you use them. These habits apply to Indian Rummy and most other variants.
- Build a pure sequence first. Without one you cannot declare, so it is the first priority.
- Look for a second sequence early. Sets are easier to complete but sequences are what make a hand valid.
- Discard high cards you are not using. Kings, queens, jacks and tens cost 10 points each if you lose the deal.
- Keep a count of cards the opponent picks from the discard pile; they tell you what they are collecting.
- Avoid discarding a card next to one your opponent just took.
- Do not hold a joker for too long if you cannot place it; use it to complete an impure sequence.
- Keep flexible, connected cards like 5-6 or 6-8 instead of isolated cards.
- Learn when to drop. A bad opening hand may cost fewer points to drop than to play out.
- Group your hand as you go so you can spot gaps quickly.
- Practise offline against the computer before playing others online, and set a time limit for yourself.
Games are for fun. If playing stops being fun, take a break.
